Tourism

Tourism in its many forms has become the life blood of the County's economy. Promoting and managing tourism have been major issues for residents and business operators alike.

Over tourism became a very obvious issue when the pandemic struck. 2020 was a year of responding on a crisis basis to the huge influx of day-trippers. The tourism management plans of 2021 and 2022 went a long way to controlling this and the past summer has been much calmer. I think we need to reconsider some of the restrictions put in place and better accommodate the needs of local residents.

In my work as the Council member on the Visit the County Board, we have committed to promoting year-round tourism - smoothing out the summer peak to provide employment in the industry throughout the year. Some tourism businesses are already adopting this model (Wander the Resort is one example). Year-round business means year round employment.
