Size of Council - and Ward Boundaries
A question will be on this year's ballot to assess the public's interest in a review of Council size.
The question is:
Are you in favour of a third-party review of Council size and related ward boundaries?
Answer options: “Yes” or “No” only
In order for the result to be binding on the next Council, more than 50% of eligible electors must vote on the question. we have never achieved a 50% turnout.
My view is that regardless of whether or not the 50% turnout is achieved the next Council should undertake the review. Even though this issue has been addressed by Council a couple of times before, there has never been an independent professional assessment of what could be the best option:
--Keep the current number of Councillors and wards
--Reduce the number of Councillors and consolidate wards
-- Move to an election at large model where Councillors are elected by the whole County.
I favour whatever option allows representation of local interests to be maintained and am willing to see what a professional analysis recommends.
